Prime Minister Mark Carney is expected to share more details about the federal government’s plan to fight antisemitism and hate in Canada later today.

His office said he will outline the next steps at a press conference in Toronto at 5 p.m. EST.

Incidents of antisemitism in Canada have risen dramatically since the Hamas terrorist attack on Israel on October 7, particularly in the Greater Toronto Area, home to the country’s largest Jewish population.

Just last month, three visibly Jewish individuals were shot at with a replica firearm outside a synagogue in the city and posters for a missing Jewish teenager were repeatedly torn down. In March, multiple synagogues in the GTA were damaged by gunfire.

Noah Shack, CEO of the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs, said in a statement that such offences “are happening amidst a broader campaign to drive Jews from public life and out of Canada entirely.”

While Ottawa has made progress by improving security measures for vulnerable communities and introducing legislation aimed at tackling hate, Shack said more is needed and called for stronger enforcement, meaningful consequences, and greater efforts to address the root cause of fomenting hate — “radicalization, promotion of terrorism, and terrorist entities operating here in Canada.”

“The Prime Minister has an opportunity to set the tone from the highest office to make clear that nothing can justify the hatred, intimidation, and violence Jewish Canadians are experiencing and that every tool at the government’s disposal will be used to confront it,” he wrote.

“Monday’s address should serve as a call-to-action for governments, law enforcement, public institutions, and Canadians from all walks of life.”

Opposition Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre said Carney should begin today’s announcement with a “big apology.”

“The Liberal Party has set to divide Canadians, one against the other,” he told reporters on Monday.

“They have let in terrorists and anti-Semites through our policy of open borders, their soft-on-crime policies allow violent anti-Semites to be released back onto the streets to terrorize Jewish communities.”

Poilievre said he believes the federal Liberals have “stoked this anti-Semitism by saying one thing in a synagogue and then saying exactly the opposite in a mosque to divide the communities against each other.”

“Mark Carney should lay out an apology to the Jewish community for the violence, the terror, and the fear that his party and his government have allowed to happen over the last decade.”
