Wet weather woes: Heavy rain expected into Wednesday puts damper on Edmonton events

Edmonton’s set for a stormy start to the week, but there’s also light at the end of the tunnel.

Environment Canada is forecasting a prolonged watering, with Edmonton expected to soak up between 50 mm and 100 mm of rain over the next three days. Localized total amounts could exceed 100 mm.

The forecaster on Saturday issued a yellow rainfall warning, with around 30 mm to 40 mm of rain expected on Sunday, alongside northwest winds of 50 km/h, gusting up to 70 km/h.

Alberta’s River Forecast Centre said water will likely pool on roads and in low-lying areas and recommends motorists avoid driving through flooded roadways and watch for washouts near rivers, creeks and culverts.

The conditions will set a soggy stage for soccer fans as Edmonton hosts a nearly sold-out pre-World Cup game Monday, with chilly highs of 12 C and 8 C in the evening. Canada’s men’s team faces Uzbekistan in a friendly match ahead of the FIFA World Cup later this month.

With many of the seats being uncovered, fans should be prepared with rain gear and warm clothing. However, umbrellas with pointed ends or larger than 16 inches aren’t permitted.

The Edmonton Elks also endured rainy weather on Friday in the pre-season finale at Clarke Stadium, resulting in an hour-long delay, and ending in a 21-18 loss.

A Sunday news release from the City of Edmonton said the “extreme weather” prompted it to cancel its Connect with Our Roots event that was kicking off Indigenous history month. A follow-up for the event is planned for July 25.

Despite the downpour, forecasters expect light at the end of the clouds.

After the rain peters out Wednesday, sun and a mix of clouds are expected on Thursday with highs of 20 C and a small chance of showers.

Following that, a warmer weekend is in store with sunnier skies and highs above 20 C.
