Quebec government engineers will strike again, starting June 11, for an indefinite period, every Thursday, in addition to evenings, nights and weekends.
They are 1900 members of the Professional Association of Engineers of the Government of Quebec (APIGQ). They work mainly at the Ministry of Transport, but also at the Ministry of Environment, Natural Resources, Municipal Affairs and Cybersecurity.
The union has a mandate for a general and unlimited strike. Its members had already held a one-day strike on May 20th.
In an interview on Monday, the union president, Marc-André Martin, warned that the new indefinite strike will have repercussions on infrastructure projects.
“This is going to be noticeable. This is going to have a considerable impact. In Quebec, all the construction work, everything in the metropolitan areas, the urban sectors, it’s all done at night. When you pour concrete in the summer, you have to do it at night to prevent the concrete from overheating. So, clearly, this is going to have a big impact, just because of the evenings and weekends. We’re also going to have a big impact because there will be one less day. These days, engineers don’t have enough hours in a day to complete all the deliverables we have to submit for the summer.”
The collective agreement expired on March 31, 2023, at the same time as those of other state employees.
